Born in 1951, Shakeel obtained his Diploma in Arts from the Central Institute of Arts and Crafts in 1975. After finishing his first year at the Institute, he went to America in `1970 and stayed there until 1973 when his father called him back to give a helping hand in his business. Shakeel thought that he would be able to manage his father`s business. When he really faced the situation, he discovered that he was an artist only. He took admission in the Institute again and completed his art education. While in the USA, he studied art at the Art Students` League of New York and majored in portraiture under the guidance of eminent portrait painter Robert Brokeman. He was impressed by the realistic works of Andrew Wyeth and Ken Davis. Influenced by their perfection, he started painting still life. It was in 1980 when he painted a table covered with a lace table cloth for the first time. The subject became very popular and since then he has been painting it with variations.
